These entries will focus on the various types of conflicts that afflict the male protagonists in specific films. Not only will the entries identify the type of conflicts but also explore how they function as antagonists to the male protagonist. They will look at the complications that exist with certain types conflicts in order to determine how they either challenge the established representation of male dilemma or illustrate them. The films that will be discussed in relation to this approach are as follows: Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957), Eliza Kazan’s On the Waterfront (1954), and Carol Reed’s The Third Man (1949).
